Student Highlights
Grad student receives DOE fellowship
Nuclear engineering graduate student Nick Thoreson earned a U.S. Department of Energy NEUP University Nuclear Leadership Program fellowship to support his research. Thoreson's graduate research focuses on the thermal hydraulics - heat transfer and fluid flow - associated with liquid sodium metal.
For undergrad, internship adds international perspective on nuclear innovation
Nuclear Engineering undergraduate student, Brienna Johnson, completed an internship with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria. During her year-long internship, Johnson worked in IAEA's nuclear power engineering section, where she was a member of a team focused on nuclear innovation and plant life management.
NSF honors outstanding grad student researcher
Nuclear engineering graduate student Sam Garcia received a prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship in 2022. Garcia's research focuses on multiphysics modeling of nuclear microreactors.
Grad student honored for exceptional mentorship of undergraduate scholar
Mechanical engineering PhD student Abhishek Gupta received an Exceptional Mentorship Award from the UW-Madison Undergraduate Research Scholars (URS) program for the 2020-2021 academic year. Gupta was recognized for his outstanding work mentoring Dhanvi Bharadwaj, an undergraduate physics student and participant in the URS program, on a research project in the lab of his faculty advisor, Engineering Physics Assistant Professor Ramathasan Thevamaran.
Hilldale Undergraduate/Faculty Research Fellowship
2021 Engineering Physics Recipients:
Zitong Huang, Engineering Physics; Christopher Zahasky
Alex Nelson, Engineering Mechanics; Adrien Couet
Lucille Steffes, Engineering Mechanics; Snezana Stanimirovic
Grace Stanke, Nuclear Engineering undergraduate, named Miss Wisconsin 2022
Grace Stanke, a senior in nuclear engineering at UW-Madison, was named Miss Wisconsin 2022 in June. Her year of service is dedicated to advocating for nuclear power and promoting America's shift to zero-carbon energy. Stanke will compete in December's Miss America competition.
Grad student earns Department of Defense SMART scholarship
Trevor Dunt, a student in the University of Wisconsin-Madison nuclear engineering and engineering physics master’s program, has received a U.S. Department of Defense SMART program scholarship. The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) scholarship-for-service program provides a combined education and career opportunity for students to gain technical skills in critical STEM fields and support the national security mission of the Department of Defense.
EP Student Groups
Solis
Solis is a student-led group for women and gender minorities in plasma physics and fusion energy research. Group focuses include: Outreach to local schools, networking and professional development, social activities, and campus inclusivity efforts.
Graduate Women in Mechanical Engineering (GWME)
GWME is a group that aims to create a safe space and a better environment for women and gender minorities in mechanical engineering and affiliated fields.
UW AIAA
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) at UW-Madison focuses on better acquainting students with the aerospace engineering field. We like to build and launch rockets and have fun doing it! We participate in various engineering competitions focusing primarily on rocket design, but we aren't afraid to tackle other aerospace engineering challenges.
Engineering Physics and Mechanics - Graduate Student Organization
The mission of EPM - GSO is to create an avenue for students to share their research in a semi-formal, low-stakes environment with their peers, learn about research in other fields they may not otherwise hear about, and create a graduate student community across departments.
UW ANS
The UW student section of the American Nuclear Society shapes our members to be positive role models in our community and world through the use of professional development and public outreach events. Events include: student conferences, power plant tours, and youth workshops.
Engineering Physics Student Advisory Committee
The EP Student Advisory Committee is an informal "gathering place" for student-focused advocacy in the Engineering Physics Department. We work to ensure students are represented at meetings that could have implications for EP student life, such as the monthly EP departmental meetings. Past (and current!) work includes advocating for revisions to the EP qualifying exams, improving the first year graduate student experience, and generally promoting a sense of community within the EP department.
